"It is my great honor to nominate Dr. Jianping Chen for the SASE Career Achievement Award.
Jianping is an industry-recognized technical leader in reservoir simulation and workflow development. He has developed multiple novel methods used extensively in Chevron with significant business impact. Earlier, he was a Schlumberger (SLB)-secondee to the joint development of the industry standard INTERSECT reservoir simulator. INTERSECT is also the standard for all Chevron assets for reliable production forecasting and upstream decision-making of new fields / infill development.
Jianping is a recognized expert in well modeling, subsurface and surface coupled modeling, simulation environment applications, and digital solutions for field development optimization (FDO). Jianping holds a PhD in Petroleum Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin (1993) and joined Chevron in 2006 as a Staff Research Scientist in the Chevron Technology Company (CTC) Reservoir Simulation Development team after having worked ~14 years for SLB, Resources Engineering System Inc. (1993-1996) and other companies (1997-1999).
In 1999-2001, working at SLB Abingdon Technology Center, Jianping developed the surface network model for Eclipse with novel algorithms. The resulting product, Eclipse Network Solver, is commercially marketed by SLB and widely used in Chevron for its robustness and simplicity.
In 2001-2006, Jianping led INTERSECT well and network sub-team in the formulation, design, and development of the unified well and network model which was first of its kind and critical for meeting INTERSECT scalability goals of a high-performance simulator.
In 2006-2010, Jianping pioneered the development of subsurface and surface network coupling technology integrating INTERSECT with Integrated Production Model (IPM), the industry leading tool for surface network by Petroleum Experts LLC. He played a leading role in moving the technology from R&D to practice within Chevron. The technology has been deployed to 25+ assets across Chevron.
In 2011-2017, Jianping was SAGE (Simulator Applications Graphical Environment) Project Manager and principal developer of simulation environment products such as the CHEARS to INTERSECT migrator and INTERSECT ModelBuilder – key enablers for the successful company-wide uptake of INTERSECT.
In 2017-2020, Jianping was the Team Leader of Reservoir Simulation and Workflow Support (RSWS) serving 300+ enterprise-wide users with differentiated technologies. Under Jianping’s leadership, RSWS consistently received the highest satisfaction ratings (~98% and 100%) in the 2018 and 2020 surveys, respectively.
In 2020 – Present, Jianping is a Chapter Manager in Chevron Technical Center (CTC) and has been the technical leader in the development of digital solutions enabled by FDPlan, a cloud native application in SLB DELFI digital platform that enables automation of end-to-end workflows from earth model to simulation to economics. Jianping is the key driver in delivering FDPlan (co-dev with SLB) to Chevron’s Deep Water Asset Class for faster, more accurate, and more effective field development optimization. It is estimated FDPlan has over $150 million value creation per year via capital avoidance and cycle time reduction for Deep Water Assets.
Over his 18-year career in Chevron, Jianping has a proven track record of mentoring, collaborating with peers both within Chevron and externally, and developing and applying innovative technologies. His team has hosted multiple interns annually since 2011 and has established a practice of bringing interns in as full-time team members to favorable effect in support of the team objectives.
Jianping has demonstrated sustained exceptional achievement and has authored or co-authored numerous technical papers covering a wide range of topics on reservoir simulation, fractured reservoirs, well modeling, coupled network models, decline curve analysis and S&T (Shale & Tight) modeling. "
